Then I glanced around the lounge in horror. I could still vividly recall how the morning started on that fateful day I found Sherlock standing in the living room with an expression I had seen only once, a month ago, during the showdown with his sister, Eurus Holmes. The event occurred a few days before the London Jewellery Roadshow held at the World Conservation and Exhibition Centre in the British Museum. That being said, of all the cases I had the pleasure to participate in, none of them stood out like this singularity, so bizarre that even Sherlock was forced to re-evaluate his belief system it was a case that involved something we never wanted to believe was real. It was my own moral compass and the trauma from my service in the War in Afghanistan that kept me from getting swept away by Sherlock’s dangerous charm, prventing me to share his questionable view about murder as a form of artistic entertainment. Sherlock solved mysteries not in the name of justice, but merely as a stimulant to keep his shrewd mind occupied-he had a great love for gore and death that accompanied the process of piecing the ugly jigsaw together. Not to mention his keen but sophisticated intellect that often questioned the ideas of morality and ethics, citing them as “useless facts elbowing out the useful ones, thus reducing the brain’s already limited capacity to learn the more important things in my field of work,” in his words. I was always amazed, fascinated-even intimidated-by his sharp observational skills that made me wonder if he could read minds. Having known Sherlock Holmes and his eccentricity for over a year, I was led to believe that nothing in this world could astound me more than him delivering a cutting-edge deduction that sounded like a machine gun emptying its bullets happily at the culprits behind every heinous crime. It feels good to say all that out loud to mark Jerry’s passing while I am traveling in an RV to recover from a wildfire taking every trace of films or prints that ever ran through my fingers.Īfter all those years standing in darkrooms and then all those years sitting in front of big desktop computers to make prints - not to speak of all the lectures and classes he gave - I bet his soul is grateful for the rest. Photography is so much more than a “job” - it’s a vocation. It’s their fault photography - and now mobile digital imaging - have become my daily spiritual practice. but I am no way as grateful for any digital processes for editing or compositing (even my beloved iPhone Apps) as I am for what I learned from Jerry Uelsmann and Bea Nettles running years and years of analogue processes to squeeze multiple images (and words) together to process and communicate the human experience.
No hyperbole, its Jerry Ueslman’s vision and skill at presenting photographic images that described both outside subjects and inner landscapes of mind that set me on the trail I’m still walkin’.Īnd it’s the simple truth that all the years I spent exposing, developing, and printing black-and-white film images onto silver gelatin papers and using other analogue alternative photographic capture and printing processes did the hard work of opening my vision and developing my traditional photographic and printing skills.Īll Photoshop did was allow us to work in daylight. And I was always imagining how I was going to print two or three images in one frame once I learned how to process the film and make prints. I shot dozens and dozens of rolls of b&w and color slide films I imagined I would learn how to process whenever we stopped traveling. Back at UGA a month later, I signed up for the Time-Life Photography series and snuck-read every volume while finishing my undergrad in English and Philosophy and starting a Masters in Linguistics. Until I set foot in Jerry’s show at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota in 1969 or 70 (apologies, I no longer have that catalogue to check the date) I thought my job in this life was all about words.
